Guest Lecture by Mariama de Brito-Henn in Halle (Germany)

We’re pleased to share that our team member Mariama was invited as a guest lecturer at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, where she is contributing to the course “Unter Druck – Prints im postkolonialen Kontext”, part of the Fashion Design program within the module Grundlagen der Gestaltung 2.

Mariama was invited to cover the historical and theoretical dimensions of fashion history, postcolonialism, and cultural appropriation. She opened the course with an introductory lecture and discussion and will continue to support students throughout the semester as they develop their individual projects.

The project-based course, led by Prof. Evelyn Sitter along with Nanyi Li, Isabel Fiedler, and Joachim Unterfrauner, critically explores cultural appropriation in fashion. Students investigate iconic textile patterns such as Paisley, Tartan, and Ikat through postcolonial, capitalist, and adaptive lenses. The seminar includes field research in secondhand shops and luxury fashion houses, leading into a hands-on upcycling workshop, where students create their own monoprints. The goal is to develop critical research skills, question commercial design norms, and explore sustainable, respectful approaches to fashion design.
