About the Lecture
This lecture is part of the series Cultural Heritage in the Middle East and Central Asia: Conservation and Destruction, which examines critical issues surrounding the preservation and loss of cultural heritage in these regions.

Join us for an insightful lecture by Nadia Radwan, as she explores the intersection of art, heritage, and resilience in the face of cultural destruction. This thought-provoking presentation will delve into the role of contemporary artistic practices in addressing urgency, cancellation, and loss in the Middle East. From craft to counter-archiving and collecting fragments, Radwan examines how these creative approaches contribute to preserving narratives and heritage amidst challenging conditions.

Key questions include:

  • How can ephemeral exhibitions generate durable narratives?

  • How do institutional constraints shape artists’ responses to censorship and cancellation?

  • Who are the audiences for artworks created in contexts of destruction and loss?

Drawing on real-world examples from contemporary artists and curatorial projects, Radwan will illuminate the ways art-making can sustain heritage and provide a voice for the silenced.
